Abstract
This research attempted to develop a functional plant pot that increases space efficiency and has an excellent design. In order to commercialize the functional plant pot, a customer design preference survey was conducted. The prototype product was made into two types, standing and hanging. First, an overall design preference survey was conducted. 372 people evaluated the designs of the product and chose a preferred design between the two. Then, 38 people used the product in indoor environment for a month to evaluate the design in real life. Design preference assessment was conducted using the semantic differential scale with adjective pairs of landscape. The good-design scale made by Korea Institute of Design Promotion was used for the design evaluation. The survey on the basic awareness of the plant pots showed that plant pots are preferred in the order of design pots (47%), special pots (36%), functional pots (15%), and regular pots (2%). This shows that the desire of consumption towards plant pots is greatly influenced by the design and function. The results of the factor analysis showed that there are five factors of the functional plant pot: aesthetic, fanciness, preference, spatiality, and comfort. Also, both types of plant pots proved to be appropriate for the living environment, providing comfort and aesthetic design. In addition, the design evaluation showed that the standing type was superior to the hanging type in suitability, purposiveness, satisfaction, usability, production, aesthetical satisfaction, but not in economic factors. The desire of consumption was also higher for the standing type plant pots. Overall, the real application and design evaluation conducted after the 1 month of using the plant pots, the standing type proved to be superior in quality. Therefore, we may conclude that the standing type functional plant pot developed through this research is a design that can increase the special efficiency of vertical spaces in confined areas while being aesthetically pleasing to grow a plant in a residential environment.
