Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends of domestic journal papers for effects of aromatherapy on sleep and depression, and suggest basic data for the direction of researches on sleep and depression, and the basis and data for application to related aromatherapy programs. Of journal papers reported in domestic, the number of those related to sleep and depression was 42. Targeting these papers, we analyzed research designs, subjects, measurement tools, methods of intervention, and effects. 36 of the totally 42 papers(85.7%) report that aromatherapy has significant effects. For aromatherapy, we applied massages, inhalation therapies, sitz bathes, etc. to various subjects from female high school students and university students to menopausal middle-aged women, hemiplegic patients and elderly with dementia, and most frequently used oils were lavender, bergamot, chamomile, and peppermint, in order. We confirmed that aromatherapy is an effective mediator for sleep and depression. In order to raise reliability of aromatherapy and apply it to related programs effectively, repetitive studies on application methods or oils should be conducted, and comparative studies with foreign papers need to be performed.
