Abstract
This study was performed to make checklists for selection of herbaceous plants in garden design. References and websites at home and abroad were compared and analyzed and the necessary items required to derive criteria for selection of herbaceous plants were set up. Herbaceous plants are selected by the usage, planting site environments and growth characteristics, and the visual characteristics. Herbaceous plants are used for flower pots, flower beds and borders, plants below woody plants, ground covers, and gardens for various styles and purposes, and divided by perennials, annuals, bulbs, grasses (including bamboos, rushes and sedges), rock plants, and water plants by growth characteristics, and planting site environments are divided by the differences of soil, light, moisture, wind, and temperature. The visual characteristics of herbaceous plants were divided into 1) shape and plant height, 2) spread, planting distance, and plant quantity, 3) texture, 4) flower color, 5) flowering months, and exceptionally 6) fragrance. In the checklist plant heights were divided into large, medium, and small, and 9 colors of white, pink, red, purple, blue, silver (grey), green, yellow, and orange according to each height were arranged, and 12 months were placed in each color to indicate color change of whole plants as well as flowers, and quantity of plants per square meter, texture of three steps and whether or not the fragrance were also indicated. This checklists were made to consider several factors at the same time to select herbaceous plants for planting plan for garden, and it can be modified easily by garden designer changing the criteria.
