Abstract
This research aimed at examining the influence of the appreciation and stroll at urban arboretum on psychological stability. The experiment was conducted at the Hanbat Arboretum, a representative urban arboretum in Daejeon, and the controlled experiment was performed at the downtown around City Hall in the same method. 24 male university students (age 21.1± 2.5) participated as subjects, and the experiment was carried out with three random groups for three days. The places for the experiment were first, the pine forest inside the arboretum, second, the pond inside the arboretum and third, the city. They appreciated the landscape for 10 minutes and walked for 15 minutes. As for the measuring indicators, POMS, STAI, and SD method were applied. When the pleasantness, the feeling of the nature, the feeling of tranquility, the sense of openness, simplicity, comfort, familiarity, and beauty were evaluated through the SD method, in all items, the appreciation or the walk in the pine forest and by the pond in the arboretum was proved to be meaningful than that in a city (p<0.01). The analysis result of POMS was also statistically meaningful at T-A(Tension and Anxiety), A-H(Anger and Hostility), V(Vigor), and F(Fatigue,), and the TMD(Total Mood Disturbance) displayed a similar result (p<0.01). The measurement result of STAI showed the experiment had the effect of psychological stability (p<0.01). Therefore, the research results above have proved that the appreciation and the walk at an arboretum in a city bring mental security.
